Backstage tour of the Berliner Ensemble

29/6/2014

Last week I took a backstage tour of the Berliner Ensemble.  The threatre was founded by the playwright Bertolt Brecht, whose Brechtian style of theatre is world renowned.  The elderly man who showed us around acted himself in Brecht’s plays whilst Brecht was alive.  He was a fantastic storyteller and really brought the whole thing to life!

The theatre itself is absolutely beautiful inside with ornate plaster figures, marble staircases and lots of gold covering the ceiling.  Backstage, we had the very rare opportunity to view under the stage, which is a vast mechanized scenic space including a huge wooden revolve (seen in the picture).  In total, there are five stages, including a beautiful outdoor stage for singing performances and several studio spaces.  It really did make me want to work back in the theatre!  3 Points (as it is a world famous theatre and VERY difficult to get a backstage tour of - I've been trying since last December)?

These are two locations at once. Umspannwerk Ost is a fancy restaurant, offering good German style food in a nice ambiente. Kriminaltheater mostly plays Agatha Christy and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in an old fashioned way. We watches "Der Hund von Baskerville". Good fun.

I've seen Dave Hause at Bi Nuu last year, But I've never been at Badeschiff concert location. It's a wonderful ambiente next to the Spree. The concert was nice, although he didn't bring a band, unlike he promised to do at Bi Nuu.

Karneval der Kulturen

Since I've been living in Cologne for a long time, I never considered Karneval der Kulturen to be anything special. I finally went this year and I liked it. It's like a mini version of Khaosan Road with lots of cheap crap, a backpacker heaven and hell. Since every second German thinks (s)he's a backpacker (wearing outdoor closes every day), it's perfect.

Chuck Ragan in SO36

Two weeks ago, I went to see Chuck Ragan in SO36. There were two support bands. Billy the Kid (Picture on the left) followed by Northcote started the show. Chuck Ragan rocked. I especially liked his bass player, who looks like a mixture of Freddy Mercury and Borat. This was my first concert at SO36 and my first Chuck Ragan (as well as Billy the Kid) show.
